What's The Difference Between Contour & Bronzer?

What's The Difference Between Contour & Bronzer?

We’re here to clear up a major makeup misconception: contour and bronzer are not the same thing. While they might look similar, these products serve completely different purposes. Let’s compare bronzer vs. contour, and talk through how you can use both in your beauty routine for snatched, radiant skin.

Benefits of Contour vs Bronzer

Contour is designed to add shadows to the skin, giving the illusion of a more defined face. It is often used to sculpt the cheekbones, slim the nose, or chisel the forehead and jawline. You’ll find it in the form of a cream, powder, and liquid.

As far as the color goes, contour typically has a cooler tint, as this creates the most realistic-looking shadows. Contours also have matte finishes for a natural appearance.

Meanwhile, bronzers are the go-to product for adding a subtle warm, just-got-back-from-vacation luminosity to the skin. They can come in the form of a cream, powder, or liquid.

Like contours, bronzers can come in matte finishes. That said, some bronzers have a shimmery or radiant finish for an extra glowy touch.

In short, you should reach for contour if you’re looking to sculpt and define your features, and bronzer if you want to warm up your complexion. Both of these products can be used independently or together, depending on the beauty look you are looking to create.

Where to Apply Bronzer & Contour

Since contour and bronzer serve different purposes, there are some key differences in where they should be applied.

Contour is meant to be applied to any areas of the face that you want to sculpt. This will depend on what look you are trying to achieve, but common application spots include under the cheekbones, along the hairline and temples, under the jawline, and along the sides of the nose.

As far as bronzer goes, you’ll want to focus it on the high points of the face, where the sun naturally hits. This includes the forehead, the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, and the chin. For a seamless look and all-over warmth, diffuse the bronzer down the neck and onto the chest.

How to Apply Bronzer vs How to Apply Contour

Here’s our expert guide on applying bronzer and contour like a pro, featuring Patrick Ta’s iconic Major Sculpt Crème Contour & Powder Bronzer Duo. This two-in-one compact features a creamy contour that seamlessly melts into the skin for effortless and natural definition. It’s joined by a radiance-enhancing powder bronzer that instantly adds a gorgeous warmth to the complexion.

How to Use Contour

If you’ll be using contour, you’ll apply the cream contour before applying the powder bronzer, and after you’ve applied foundation.

With a dense brush, stamp the cream contour into the complexion, focusing on the areas that you are looking to chisel and define (such as your cheekbones, forehead, and jaw). Continue building until you’ve reached your desired look.

Once you’ve applied your contour, use the dense brush to gently blend, softening any harsh lines for the most natural look. You can also use a fluffy brush to help blend away these lines.

If you want to contour more precise areas (such as your nose), use a small dense brush to apply it to the skin. Blend away harsh lines with a small fluffy brush.

How to Use Bronzer

Powder bronzer can be applied after the cream contour (or right after you’ve applied your foundation, if you’re skipping the contour).

With a fluffy brush, pick up the pigment and then tap off the excess. Apply the bronzer by pressing the brush into the skin, picking up more pigment as needed. Diffuse the bronzer onto the high points of the face, and don’t forget to work it down the neck and onto the chest.

Why the Right Product Matters for Your Look

When it comes to contour and bronzer, finding formulas that enhance your features while still looking natural is key. Patrick Ta’s bronzer and contour duo features easy-to-work-with formulas in carefully crafted hues for the most seamless results. It’s the ultimate pair for chiseling your features and boosting your innate glow.

Bronzer vs Contour FAQS:

Should you use both bronzer & contour?

Bronzer and contour both look gorgeous on their own. That said, if you’re looking to sculpt and give your complexion a sunkissed glow, you can use both in your makeup routine.

Can you use bronzer as contour?

You shouldn’t use bronzer as contour, as these two products serve different purposes. Contours typically have a cooler tint to them, as this helps create natural-looking shadows on the face. Since bronzers have warmer hues, they aren’t able to deliver the same results, and can end up looking unnatural when used as contour.

Who should use bronzer?

Everyone can benefit from adding bronzer to their beauty routine. It’s a great product for anyone looking to add an extra warmth and radiance to their complexion.
