Where To Apply Blush According To Your Face Shape
Whether your features are soft and rounded, angular and defined, or somewhere in between, we have all the tips and tricks on how to apply blush to enhance your face shape.
Does Blush Placement Really Matter?
Blush placement has the power to transform your overall makeup look. It’s the difference between a soft and youthful flush or a seriously snatched effect. Every face shape has unique characteristics, so customizing your blush placement is the perfect way to enhance your natural beauty.
Where to Apply Blush, Based on Your Face Shape
Here is exactly how to apply blush according to your face shape.
Round Face
Round face shapes are beautifully balanced, with soft features and proportions that are equal in length and width.
We love using blush to lift and sculpt. Apply to the tops of the cheekbones (close to the eyes), then subtly diffuse the color out towards the temples. This higher placement adds the perfect touch of definition. Pro tip: you can also lightly diffuse a bit of blush on the nose for a sweet sun-kissed look.
Square Face
Square faces have a defined jawline and structured cheekbones with features that are equal in length and width.
To balance the sharper angles of a square face, focus your blush high on the apples of the cheeks and blend out towards the temples for a seamless finish that’s free of any harsh lines. Centering the blush on the apples of the cheeks helps soften the face, giving a rounder appearance to the cheeks. You can also add a touch of blush on the tip of the nose to further balance your features and draw attention towards the center of the face.
Oval Face
Oval faces are longer than they are wide with cheekbones that go just a touch wider than the forehead, creating a beautiful shape.
If you have an oval face shape, try placing your blush higher up on the cheeks, then evenly diffuse the color out towards the temples to accentuate your natural definition. Blush below the cheekbones can draw facial features down, so when in doubt, lift it up..
Heart-Shaped Face
Heart-shaped faces follow the silhouette of a heart symbol. The forehead is the widest part of the face, and the chin is the narrowest.
Rather than applying your blush high on the cheekbones, focus your placement on the lower parts of the cheeks, softly blending it out towards the edges of the face. You can also diffuse a touch of blush onto the nose, forehead, and chin for a soft, balancing effect.
Rectangular Face
With rectangular faces, the forehead, cheeks, and jaw are all about the same width, while the length is longer.
On rectangular faces, add a pop of color to the apples of the cheeks to bring more roundness to the face. From there, blend the blush out towards the sides of the face.
Diamond Shape
The defining features of a diamond face shape include a more pointed chin and a narrower forehead with more pronounced cheekbones.
Stamp your blush onto the tops of the apples of the cheeks, and then softly blend without extending the color too far on either side. Diffuse just enough to eliminate any lines. This placement helps lift the face while promoting a balanced look.
